Image Is Cut Off or Cropped

Troubleshooting guide for when part of the projected table surface is missing or cut off.

If part of the projected image is missing or cut off at the edges, follow these steps.

Symptoms

  • One or more edges of the table are not covered by the projection
  • The image appears shifted to one side
  • Corners of the projected area are missing

Likely Causes

  • Projector position: Projector is not centered or is too close to the table.
  • Overscan: The projector or Pi is applying overscan, cropping the edges.
  • Resolution mismatch: The Pi output resolution doesn't match the projector's native resolution.

Fix Steps

  1. Check projector position: Make sure the projector lens is centered relative to the side (or end) the table. Adjust height or distance if the throw ratio is too narrow to cover the full surface.
  2. Check overscan settings: Some projectors have overscan enabled by default — disable it. On the Raspberry Pi, check that overscan compensation is set correctly in config.
  3. Verify resolution and aspect ratio: Ensure the Pi output matches the projector's native resolution. A 4:3 signal on a 16:10 projector (or vice versa) will crop or letterbox.

Still Not Working?

Still stuck? If the image remains cropped:

  • Try adjusting the projector's zoom setting
  • Verify the HDMI cable supports the required resolution
  • Contact Support with photos showing how the image is cut off
